Routine annual or twice-yearly wellness exam from our veterinarians at East Orlando Animal Hospital focus on preventive care for your pet. These routine pet checkups give your veterinarian an opportunity to check up on your dog or cat's overall health.
The Importance of Preventive Care
Wellness exams are essential to helping your pet maintain good long-term physical health. These annual or twice yearly examinations give your veterinarian the opportunity to check up on your dog or cat's overall health.
In combination with regular vaccinations, parasite prevention and proper nutrition, these routine pet checkups include a thorough physical checkup to give your pet the best chance at excellent lifelong health.
Bringing your pet in for regular vet checkups can prevent health issues from developing undetected in your pet, or catch conditions in the very earliest stages when they are most treatable.
Kitten and puppy checkups help to ensure that your furry friend gets the best possible start in life.
What to Expect During Your Pet's Physical
The veterinarian will give your pet a complete physical examination to get a clear picture of your animal's overall health. Your pet's exam includes the following elements:
General Condition
Observing your pet's general demeanour and physical condition to look for clues to their overall health. How they stand and walk, their level of alertness, and whether they are a healthy weight for their size are all important indicators of overall health.
Skin & Coat
We will check your pet's skin and coat for signs of problems, including excessive oiliness or dryness, lumps, bumps, dandruff or abnormal shedding, hair loss or bare patches.
Face & Head
Your animal's eyes, ears and nose will be examined for abnormalities or discharge. The veterinarian will also check the mouth for symptoms of oral health problems such as plaque buildup, damaged teeth or gum disease.
Internal Health
Heart rate and rhythm, pulse and blood pressure are vitally important to your pet's heart health. Your veterinarian will test these to ensure they're normal. The lungs will then be examined for evidence of abnormal breathing.
We will examine the abdomen to ensure the intestines, kidneys, bladder, spleen, liver and stomach all feel normal, and that your pet is not exhibiting any signs of discomfort, and also check the lymph nodes for signs of pain or swelling.
Puppies & Kittens
Young animals need proper medical attention in their first few weeks of life to get off to a healthy start.
We'll give your new furry friend a complete physical examination, appropriate immunizations, and deworming medication. We will also test for intestinal parasites. You'll be provided with a puppy or kitten kit filled with educational material and samples to help you care for the newest member of your family.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about caring for your new pet, both at your appointments or following your visits.
Once your pet's initial appointment is complete, you'll return periodically for ongoing health checks and booster shots.
Seniors
With recent advances in veterinary science and care, as well as newer therapies and improved nutrition, senior pets are living longer than ever.
As your pet ages, regular examinations become increasingly crucial to ensure their continuing health and longevity.
As well as the routine wellness procedures we perform on all adult pets, we will give additional attention to your senior pet's potential age-related conditions, such as arthritis or vision problems. Additional laboratory tests will also help to provide information about your pet's overall health.
Vaccinations & Prevention
During your pet's routine physical exam, the veterinarian will also check up on whether your animal requires preventive care based on parasites and conditions seen in pets near you, or if your dog or cat is due for any routine vaccinations.
